The Senses
The
DEVELOPLAY™
Activity Center stimulates the senses by offering baby varied and rich sensory experiences and activities.
It stimulates sight with such interesting and clear elements to look at as the smiling face with the blinking nose, in addition to other colorful elements.
Hearing is wonderfully stimulated with an especially wide range of sounds and tunes, including a musical unit which introduces baby to different musical instruments and shows how they all come together to play a lovely Mozart piece.
The sense of touch is stimulated by offering baby a large variety of textures, materials and shapes to experience.
Fine Motor Skills
The two sides of the
DEVELOPLAY™
Activity Center
offer over 20 different activities that provide ample opportunity for baby to prefect his fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination appropriate for his age.
The blue side offers large activities that are relatively simple – striking, rolling, pushing – appropriate for the younger baby learning basic control over his hands.
The green side offers more complex activities that require separating the fingers, using the "pincer grasp," and using fingers in a variety of ways – thereby strengthening the muscles.
Cognitive Skills
The
DEVELOPLAY™
Activity Center offers many ways to explore simple and complex examples of cause and effect.
In the simple examples, baby learns to activate an element or perform an activity to watch or see how he can make something happen – such as pushing a button and receiving audiovisual feedback.
More complex examples relating to cause and effect include learning how doing one thing, makes something else happen, such as turning one wheel on a set of gears makes the second wheel turn, or moving a lever sideways makes the flower spin.
Object Permanence
The
DEVELOPLAY™
Activity Center contributes to baby's understanding of the concept of object permanence, with a figure that jumps out from under the door, and makes funny human sounds.
Baby's ability to make this figure appear and reappear again and again contributes to the enjoyment he gets from controlling the situation.

Baby gazes at the mirror and at the colorful activities on the blue side of the
DEVELOPLAY™
Activity Center attached to his crib. He listens to the music that comes out of the smiling face, extends his hand to touch and feel, and succeeds in operating it first by chance, and gradually on intentionally.
He may also raise his legs to kick and activate an object.
Playing with this toy - blue side
Attach the
DEVELOPLAY™
to your baby's crib – perform activities to encourage him to extend his hand to touch and feel them, and eventually do them himself.
Place the
DEVELOPLAY™
in front of your baby on the carpet or blanket that he is laying on in the prone position. This will encourage him to lift his head and neck.
If your baby has difficulty raising his head, place the
DEVELOPLAY™
diagonally, so that the activities are at a comfortable angle for him to look at.
When he looks at the activities from a vertical, then horizontal position, he becomes familiar with them from different angles and learns to perform them in different ways.
When the
DEVELOPLAY™
Activity Center is on the floor, with the blue side facing baby, he can lay on his tummy or sit, and perform the various activities by striking, turning, pushing or pulling.
This is how he develops coordination between his senses (of sight, hearing, and touch), basic fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination, all the while learning to understand the connection between the actions he performs (the cause) and the results obtained (the effect).
He also enjoys the peek-a-boo"-type game the
DEVELOPLAY™
Activity Center offers, although he may need a little help from you to press the button on the peek-a-boo door.
Playing with this toy - green side
Toward the end of the period, turn the
DEVELOPLAY™
over with the green side facing up. Let your baby experiment with the new activities.
Play peek-a-boo games with the figure "hiding" behind the door.
Periodically dim the lights in the room and activate the musical unit. The lights dancing with the music are an enticing visual and auditory experience for your baby. Pay attention, though, that the darkness doesn’t cause undue anxiety.
With his improved motor skills, baby can now separate his fingers individually – uncovering a whole new world on the green side of the
DEVELOPLAY™
Activity Center.
He uses one finger to push the button on the door, and enjoys playing peek-a-boo with the character that pops out, and uses his "pincer grasp" to play with the small activity buttons on the toy.
He discovers the magic of the different sounds that come from the large music buttons, and gradually learns to differentiate between them.
He does the same activity over and over again as his skills sharpen, and eventually figures out new ways of doing them.
Playing with this toy - green side
Periodically sit with your baby and play with the
DEVELOPLAY™
together with him. Encourage him to experiment and show him new play possibilities. As you show him new ways to play, explain what you are doing out loud.
Play peek-a-boo games and let him do the hiding too.
At this age, he will start to connect names and objects, so try to name the objects out loud often.
Periodically switch between the blue and green side, to keep the play experience fresh and interesting.
The toddler's developing cognitive skills enable him to approach an activity with the expectation of what will happen.
He learns to identify the musical instrument before him and is familiar with the sounds that the full ensemble orchestra makes.
He understands how to cause them to play together and separately, and how to cause them to stop playing.
This contributes to his ability to distinguish between different types of sounds and music, and eventually learn the names of the musical instruments.
Playing with this toy - green side
Your baby's vocabulary and speech is developing, and she will begin to distinguish between the different aspects of the
DEVELOPLAY™
such as colors, shapes, and sizes. Try to incorporate these concepts as you play with your baby, or verbalize them as you watch him play on his own.
Also incorporate concepts of space, such as under, above, on the side, up, down. As she moves the buttons to the side, verbalize the action: "See, you moved the button to the side."
Teach your baby the names of the musical instruments, and show her pictures or real instruments, and verbalize what is being played by the
DEVELOPLAY™
.
The turning wheels and gears also deserve special attention. On the cognitive level, show your baby what happens when you turn one of the wheels on the gears. verbalize the action and show what happens to the other wheel. In terms of motor skills, show her how to turn the gears in several ways. For instance, using the pincer grasp to turn the blue wheel, and turning the yellow wheel by inserting one finger into the hole.
