Brave New World

Your newborn looks around at the world outside the womb she has just entered and examines it with blurred vision and a certain sense of unfamiliarity, which will subside as the weeks pass and her environment and adoring caregivers become familiar figures in her life.

Knowing Mommy

Your baby's limited senses and cognitive abilities direct her straight to her mother or primary caregiver: she recognizes her smell, voice, touch and even her facial outlines and clearly prefers her over anyone else.

Tongue Twisters

For now, her world is pretty chaotic, with no order or rules, and her behavior is governed by reflexes. However, she does display the most unexpected powers of imitation. For instance, if you stick your tongue out in front of her a few times and wait patiently, you will see that she will stick her tongue out right back at you!

Milestones
  • Behavior is governed by reflexes.
  • Prefers looking at a human face.
  • Prefers soft, embracing touches and flinches from a rough or abrupt touch.
Tiny Tips
  • Your baby does not need a lot of stimulation. You, your closeness and your touch are his main source of stimulation.
  • Hug and stroke your baby a lot and talk to him softly. This stimulates his senses and gives him a sense of security.
